David Grant is a Regional Director at Grace Healthcare. He recently had the privilege of presenting a Fifty Plus Racing Caregiver Grant. Here is his report.
On Thursday May 14, I had the honor of presenting Mr. Bobby Hysmith of Henderson, TN the very first 50 Plus Racing Alzheimer’s Caregiver’s grant at Henderson Health and Rehab Center’s annual facility cookout, hosted by John Sheehan, the facility owner.
Mr. Hysmith is a life-long citizen of this local community and had been an integral member, serving in various voluntary roles and is well known from these and his service as a funeral director in this small southwest Tennessee town. Over the past several months, however, Mr. Hysmith’s involvement in his community has dwindled, including his ability to attend church services, due to his wife’s progressing Alzheimer’s disease.
Since Mr. Hysmith's wife was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, he has served as her primary caregiver. As the disease progressed, it has been difficult for him to provide the care that she needed and has been severely limiting.
A presentation of the grant was made at the beginning of the cookout, which was attended by approximately 300 people. As I gave him the $1,000 check, he was extremely grateful and gracious in his acceptance and then took the microphone to express his gratitude and his desire to see a cure for Alzheimer’s be found. He also openly expressed his support of Henderson Health and Rehab and how the facility and staff, even though his wife is not a resident, has been truly supportive of him.
